Area Schools: Public and Independent

Children at SouthField may attend the Weymouth public schools or any number of independent schools in neighboring South Shore towns.

The Weymouth school district is organized by Pre-Kindergarten, Grades K-4, Grades 5-8, and Grades 9-12, as well as an Early Childhood Center for preschool programs. All of the children enjoy the finest education overseen by committed and highly qualified teaching staffs as well as active parent councils.

The Johnson Early Childhood Center is an accredited full- and part-time early childhood program for children ages 3-5. There are eight warm and nurturing neighborhood primary schools for grades K-4, along with an Elementary Science Center, two middle schools for grades 5-8, and the Weymouth High School for grades 9-12 in a two-building facility. One building contains the math, science, foreign language, family and consumer science classrooms as well as a fully functional community planetarium. The second building contains a Humanities Center and the English, social studies and fine arts programs. All classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art resources and follow a rigorous 5-year Technology Plan to promote new and emerging technologies.

The High School offers students nearly 40 different clubs and organizations as an integral part of the curriculum, including its own news broadcasting station. Its full menu of athletic programs includes some of the strongest teams in the state.

Have you seen the September 2008 issue of Boston magazine? It's their annual "School Issue" where they rank the best public high schools in the state.

Kudos to Weymouth High School, which ranked #7 for Academic Performance. For the full ranking of 141 Boston-area schools and their methodology, go to bostonmagazine.com/bestschools2008.

As they say in the article, "Showy scores are no longer enough. True standout schools also excel at stretching tax dollars." Their goal in compiling this year's list of the area's 50 best public schools was not to identify only those schools that are performing well, but also those doing so while operating efficiently, too. So kudos to the superintendent and administrators as well for running their budgets efficiently and working strategically to beat the budget squeeze.
